Do you have a musical kid? One who plays air guitar for hours in front of the mirror? And are you thinking that maybe you'll buy them the guitar that goes with the game system they got last Christmas? Well, you'd better check with the Consumer Products Safety Commission before you do, because there's a recall on the guitar.

Once again, over 50,000 potentially unsafe toys are in the hands of children who could be burned if they don't install the AA batteries properly. I don't know about your kids, but mine are typically slapdash about things like putting in batteries, especially if they're anxious to play their Wii system.

Careful and kids aren't words that go together, so I wouldn't be surprised if many kids haven't installed the batteries properly in the Rage Guitar that's the subject of the toy recall. I know I have trouble installing batteries, myself, at times.

Just when I was thinking that maybe toy recalls were slowing down and that Christmas shopping was going to be easier, this and other recalls show me that there's still plenty of room for improvement in the toy industry. Wouldn't you think all the other toy recalls, and the consumer mistrust that they caused, would have made the industry more determined to clean up their act?

With the Christmas shopping season around the corner, I know this doesn't make me confident that choosing popular toys and games made in foreign countries is a good idea. My kids' well-being trumps popularity in my book, so when I choose gifts for the kids on my list, I'll be putting safety first.

That's why I'm so angry that I have to take back this guitar that I bought to surprise my musical kid. I don't know who's more disappointed, me or the guitar hero. I guess the only bright side to playing in front of the mirror again is that air guitars don't have safety recalls.

In the United States alone, the number of children aged 3-17 years old who are afflicted with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) was pegged at 4.7 million in 2006 per data complied by the National Center for Health Statistics. And the numbers are rising in other countries as well!

If you are a parent whose child was officially diagnosed with ADHD, then you must acknowledge that your child has special needs when it comes to filling up her toy chest. You can follow these "P" suggestions in filling it up appropriately.

Pretend Play

Role playing in children achieve important goals in child development. It develops social and emotional skills, builds on language skills and improves thinking skills, all of which are important considerations for responsible parents. On the part of your child, pretend play toys in her toy chest simply spells fun, fun, fun.

To achieve this win-win situation, you can provide for educational toys, props and objects in her toy chest like:

Drama costumes that allow her to role play her imaginary characters, which can be anything from simple patches to elaborate wigs. These provide for creative outlets to act out feelings that your child cannot express directly and to develop the ability to imagine various scenarios. The latter is useful in developing empathy for others, which ADHD children often have difficulty dealing with.

Puppets that allow for your child to have fun with different characters and voices. Again, your child will develop creative imagination and communication skills that are required of puppet skits. Never mind if the skits are out-of-this-world wacky; the important thing is she sits still long enough to tell a story!

Activity toys that play to her strength - hyperactivity. Her toy chest can be filled with dolls, dollhouses, vehicles and activity sets that allow her to play with her hands while engaging her imagination.

Just remember that you have to keep her pretend play toys simple. Since ADHD children have trouble paying attention and sitting still for extended periods, the simpler the instructions and the shorter the game time, the better for her self-confidence.

Paint and Play

Your ADHD child can benefit from engaging in art because of its open-ended nature - there is no right and wrong way with it. With art, your child can draw anything and everything! Your part is to build on her self-confidence by praising her work no matter how abstract and absurd it appears to be.

Again, you are building on her self-confidence while encouraging her to engage in a relatively quiet activity for longer periods. In addition, you are providing for non-verbal ways with which she can express her feelings.

You have to provide art supplies like non-toxic clay, play dough, colorful markers, pens and pencils, safe paints and crayons, various sizes of papers, even her own easel. You can provide for a separate toy chest for her art supplies if you want to.

Though there is no known cure for ADHD at present, you can help your child become well-adjusted with the right toys in her toy chest. The time is now!

Raising monarch butterflies is a fun project that the whole family can enjoy together. All you need is a container to raise them in and a good supply of milkweed. Adults as well as children will enjoy watching these fascinating creatures grow and transform.

You can purchase a caterpillar enclosure, but it’s not necessary to buy something fancy. Any large container will do. We like to use bulk-size plastic jars such as those you would find in the warehouse stores.

Milkweed is essential for monarchs; the butterflies lay their eggs on the milkweed, and the caterpillars will only eat milkweed. Milkweed can be found in meadows, vacant lots, and on the side of highways. There are a number of varieties, but it's usually the tallest plant in the meadow. You can tell if you have the right one because if you break off a leaf, it bleeds a sticky white sap.

The best time to look for eggs is during the southward migration in late summer or early fall, but depending on where you live, you may be able to find them intermittently throughout the summer.

The Monarchs usually lay their eggs on the underside of the leaves. Look for a tiny, white, football-shaped egg about the size of a pin head. The egg has ridges along it. If you find something round or smooth, that's not it. The Monarch eggs have a distinctive shape.

Once you find an egg, break off the entire leaf and put it in the container. Mist them lightly once a day with a plant mister or spray bottle to keep them from drying out. It takes about three days for the eggs to hatch, or less depending on how old they were when you found them. You can tell when an egg is almost ready to hatch, because it gets a black spot on top; the black spot is the caterpillar developing inside.

When the caterpillars hatch, they are no bigger than a grain of rice. Usually the first thing they do is to eat the egg, and then they begin to eat the milkweed leaf. The caterpillars will eat, poop, and grow for about two weeks. All you have to do is to clean out the frass (poop) and supply them with fresh Milkweed. Be very careful when you clean the container those first couple of days, because they are so small it’s easy to lose them. As they grow, they periodically will crawl up the side of the container and molt their skin to enable them to grow. If you see a caterpillar stuck to the side of the container and not eating, leave it alone. When it’s done molting, it’ll crawl back to the milkweed and start eating again.

When they’re small, a single leaf will last them for a while. But when they get bigger, they can chew through an entire plant in about a day! Be sure to have plenty of milkweed nearby.

After about two weeks, the caterpillar will crawl up to the top of the container and hang upside down in a ‘J’ shape. This is an indication that it’s ready to pupate, or turn into a chrysalis. It hangs upside-down for hours, wiggling from time to time. When it’s ready, the skin at the bottom splits and peels up, and what emerges is a chrysalis. It’s a most amazing transformation if you get to see it! The chrysalis continues to wiggle for a little while, until it hardens into a beautiful green and gold jewel.

After about ten days, the chrysalis turns dark and you’ll be able to see the butterfly’s wing pattern inside. The chrysalis splits, and the butterfly emerges. At first, its wings are wet and crumpled and it needs to hang upside down to dry them for a few hours. Be sure that it has room to hang the wings down without bending them.
